I Need My Voter Registration Made Confidential

In California, your voter registration record is not available to the general public. However, state laws allow some applicants to access voter registration information that is not available to the public. For details on who has access, visit our page on privacy.

If sharing your voter registration and address could put your life in danger, you may be able to apply for confidential voter registration status through order of the superior court or by applying to the California Secretary of State’s “Safe at Home” Program. You may also request to have your voter registration made confidential through the superior court.

There are two ways you may be qualified to participate in the Safe at Home Program under Title 1, Division 7 of the California Government Code:

• Pursuant to Chapter 3.1 for persons attempting to escape from actual or threatened domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, or elder or dependent adult abuse.

• Pursuant to Chapter 3.2 for a reproductive health care services provider, employee, volunteer, or patient. As of the year 2020, California’s Governor signed an order including local health officers and public health officials in the program.

Approved applicants are assigned a special mailing address where they will receive their voting materials and important election reminders, and their voter information does not appear in any list, including a roster at a Vote Center and lists provided to approved applicants.
