Every election, the Registrar of Voters operates the polling places entirely with volunteers. This year, staffing these polling places is particularly tricky.
With less than a month until the June 3rd Statewide Primary Election, the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office is still in need of over 1000 individuals to volunteer to serve as Election Officers. This election will require staffing 871 polling locations in 9 languages throughout the county.
For the first time, the Santa Clara Registrar of Voters aims to staff the polls with Election Officers fluent in Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, and Korean.
In the past, Santa Clara County was only required to have Election Officers fluent in English, Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
This year, supporting more languages puts the county in need of more volunteers.
“We are building partnerships with more communities than ever before. If you have ever thought about being more involved with the democratic process, right now is a perfect time to take action,” said Shannon Bushey, Registrar of Voters.
The shortage of volunteers is due to a variety of reasons, including graduations and summer vacations. Residents who can spare a day and would like to participate in the democratic process are encouraged to contact the Registrar of Voters’ Office immediately as training has already started.
Election Officers, consisting of Inspectors and Clerks, are needed throughout the county, particularly those willing to serve in the areas of Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, and Stanford.
Anyone who is registered to vote in the state of California or a legal permanent resident can become an Election Officer. Experience is not necessary as training is provided.
Volunteers are paid a stipend of $95.00 or more. They can also earn an extra stipend for bilingual skills. Bilingual Election Officers must be fluent in English and one of the following languages: Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering to be an Election Officer can sign up by calling 1 (408) 299-POLL [7655] or online at www.vote.santaclaracounty.gov.
